Non-Destructive Testing Facilities
The department utilises lecture rooms on campus for its theory lectures. The practicals are conducted in four purpose-designed and dedicated non-destructive testing laboratories as follows:
– an electromagnetic testing laboratory for magnetic particle testing and eddy current testing. This laboratory also temporarily houses recently acquired fracture hardness testing equipment.
– an ultrasonic testing laboratory for conventional ultrasonic testing, phased array ultrasonic testing and time of flight diffraction. This laboratory is also used for visual and optical testing practicals.
– a liquid penetrant testing laboratory, which includes an in-line tank system.
– an x-ray bay, processing / dark-room and a viewing room for film radiographic testing

Liquid Penetrant Testing is a widely applied and low-cost non-destructive method used to detect surface-breaking defects in all non-porous material.
Magnetic particle Inspection is a non-destructive testing method for detecting surface and shallow subsurface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as iron, nickel, cobalt, and some of their alloy.
Phased array ultrasonic (PA) is an advanced method of ultrasonic testing that has applications in medical imaging and industrial non-destructive testing, and it is used to detect surface and volumetric defects.
